Hiring and Keeping Good Groundies in a Tree Business

Ask any climber what makes a good day and they will tell you: a good ground crew. Groundies drag brush, feed the chipper, run ropes, manage the drop zone, keep the site safe, and clean up so the customer is happy. Yet many tree companies treat the ground crew as interchangeable and then wonder why they keep losing people. Here is how to hire and keep good groundies.

Groundies Are Not Just LaborHiring Climbers for Your Tree Business: What to Look For covers the hardest hire on a tree crew. But a great climber with a weak ground crew is a slow, frustrated crew. A good groundie anticipates what the climber needs, keeps the drop zone clear, runs the rigging lines with focus, and spots problems before they become accidents.

Many of your future climbers and crew leaders will start as groundies. Treat the role as the first rung on a ladder, not a dead end, and you will hire and keep better people.

Hire for Reliability and Awareness You can teach a new groundie how to feed a chipper and tie the knots your crew uses. It is much harder to teach someone to show up on time or to pay attention on a job site. In interviews, focus on reliability, work history, and whether they understand that this work is physical and outdoors in every kind of weather.

Situational awareness is huge. Ask how they handled a past job where safety mattered. Look for people who notice things. Hiring rules and required checks vary by location, so make sure your hiring process follows what applies in your area.

Ask current crew members if they know anyone. Good groundies often know other good groundies, and a crew member who refers a friend has a stake in that person working out.

Train in Stages New groundies should not be thrown into the busiest part of the drop zone on day one. Train in stages. Start with cleanup, dragging brush, and learning the site layout. Then move to the chipper, then to running lines under supervision. Each stage should have a clear sign-off from the crew leader before moving on.

Write down your company's way of doing things so training does not depend on who happens to be on the crew that week. The next article covers onboarding in more detail.

Give the Ground Crew the Plan, Too In many tree companies, only the crew leader knows where the crew is going and what the job is. Everyone else rides along and waits to be told. That wastes time and leaves groundies feeling like spare parts.

The TreeBossPro crew app can show the job list, route, property notes, gate codes, and drop zones to everyone who needs them. When groundies know that the chipper has to stay on the street and brush gets stacked by the back gate, they set up without waiting. Because TreeBossPro is never billed per user, giving the ground crew access does not raise your software bill.

Pay Attention to Why People Leave Groundie turnover is expensive. Every new hire costs training time, slows the crew, and raises the odds of a mistake. When people leave, find out why. Common reasons include unpredictable hours, chaotic mornings, being yelled at, no path to better pay, and feeling invisible.

Some of those are management problems software cannot fix. Others it helps with. A schedule built the day before means fewer chaotic mornings. Time tracking means accurate hours and fewer pay disputes. A clear plan in the app means fewer shouted instructions.

Ask the people who stay, too. What keeps them here? The answers tell you what to protect as the company grows.

Build a Path Up Tell new groundies what the path looks like. What they need to learn to get a raise. What it takes to start climbing. What a crew leader does. Then follow through. When a groundie learns to climb and stays with your company, you have solved two hiring problems at once.

Keep notes on each person's progress and talk about it regularly. To see how TreeBossPro keeps the whole crew working from the same plan, visit the tree service business software overview. Good groundies make good crews, and good crews make a tree business worth owning.
